As the material is thinned down from its multi-layer bulk state to a pristine monolayer, severe quantum confinement triggers a radical shift from a 1.2 eV indirect bandgap to a prominent 1.8 to 1.9 eV direct bandgap. This transition enables highly efficient, direct photon-electron conversion without momentum-conserving phonon assistance. Emerging as a disruptive vanguard to replace conventional silicon in post-Moore scaling eras, Monolayer $MoS_2$ exhibits an exceptional room-temperature current on/off ratio exceeding 10^10, substantial mechanical flexibility, excellent immunity to short-channel leakages at sub-nanometer nodes, and robust excitonic photoluminescence. Consequently, it commands a vital strategic position in the scalable deployment of next-generation low-power field-effect transistors (FETs), flexible optoelectronics, valleytronics, and highly sensitive photodetectors.
