Moisture-Curing Polyurethane Hot Melt Adhesive refers to a one-component reactive hot melt adhesive based mainly on isocyanate-terminated polyurethane prepolymers. The adhesive is heated into a molten state and applied through a nozzle, roller, slot die, spray head, or other heated dispensing system.
After application, the adhesive cools and physically solidifies, rapidly generating green strength and allowing bonded components to be handled or transferred to the next manufacturing process. During the subsequent chemical-curing stage, reactive isocyanate groups absorb moisture from the surrounding air or bonded substrates and form a cross-linked polyurethane or polyurethane–urea network. Once fully cured, the adhesive develops improved heat, moisture, chemical, aging, and mechanical resistance and generally cannot be remelted.

The upstream industry chain includes polyester polyols, polyether polyols, methylene diphenyl diisocyanate, other isocyanates, thermoplastic modifiers, tackifying resins, catalysts, antioxidants, stabilizers, fillers, pigments, UV tracers, bio-based polyols, and moisture-barrier packaging materials.
The midstream includes polyurethane-prepolymer synthesis, formulation design, reaction control, vacuum dehydration, blending, viscosity adjustment, filtration, moisture-protected filling, quality testing, application testing, and technical support.
The downstream mainly covers woodworking and furniture, automotive and transportation, electronics and electrical equipment, textiles and footwear, building materials and construction, bookbinding and graphic arts, and other industrial assembly industries.
Demand for moisture-curing PUR hot melt adhesives is supported by increasing automation in furniture lamination, edge banding, automotive interior production, electronic-device assembly, technical-textile lamination, and industrial component manufacturing.
Compared with conventional thermoplastic hot melts, PUR reactive hot melts combine rapid green-strength development with subsequent chemical cross-linking. This allows manufacturers to shorten clamping and handling times while achieving improved resistance to heat, moisture, solvents, plasticizers, and long-term environmental exposure.
The technology is increasingly used for bonding dissimilar materials, including wood-based panels, decorative films, PVC, PET, textiles, foams, engineering plastics, metals, glass, and composite materials. One-component application eliminates on-line component mixing, while the absence of conventional solvent evaporation reduces the need for long drying ovens.
However, PUR hot melts require moisture-protected storage and controlled melting equipment because premature exposure to water may cause curing inside the package or application system. Final curing speed is affected by environmental humidity, temperature, adhesive thickness, substrate permeability, and moisture availability.
Product development is increasingly focused on micro-emission grades with lower residual monomeric isocyanate content. Some modern products contain less than 0.1% monomeric MDI, reducing workplace labeling and handling requirements while maintaining high heat and moisture resistance.
