Midstream processing involves cell harvesting, disruption (mechanical or chemical), and lipid extraction (solvent-based or green methods like supercritical CO₂), followed by purification and fractionation into specific triglyceride profiles. Downstream, microbial triglycerides are tailored for applications in biofuels (renewable diesel, SAF), food and nutrition (structured lipids, cocoa butter equivalents), cosmetics, and oleochemicals, offering a sustainable alternative to plant- or animal-derived fats with controlled fatty acid composition and lower land-use dependency. In 2025, global Microbial Triglyceride output was about 250,000 tons with 380,000 tons of capacity, average prices of USD 2,000–3,500 per ton, and gross margins around 33%.
