Methyl ether is a colorless, low-boiling, highly volatile compound used as an aerosol propellant, fuel, and chemical intermediate. Its supply chain begins with upstream feedstocks, mainly natural gas, coal, or biomass, which are converted into synthesis gas (CO + H₂). In the midstream production stage, syngas is catalytically transformed into methanol and then dehydrated (or directly synthesized) into DME using solid acid catalysts (e.g., alumina or zeolites) in integrated or two-step processes. The downstream chain includes purification, liquefaction, and storage under moderate pressure, followed by distribution via cylinders, bulk tanks, or blending into LPG infrastructure. End-use sectors span aerosol propellants, LPG blending, transportation fuels (diesel substitute), and chemical synthesis intermediates, with logistics supported by existing pressurized gas handling systems. In 2025, global Methyl Ether output was about 22 million tons with 27 million tons of capacity, average prices of USD 600–900 per ton, and gross margins around 24%.
