Methoxyfenozide is a novel, highly selective, low-toxicity benzoyl hydrazine insecticide with high selective insecticidal activity against lepidopteran pests. It is predominantly a contact insecticide with some systemic activity. This drug is a biomimetic molting hormone; after ingesting the pesticide, pests initiate a molting response. Incomplete molting leads to dehydration and starvation, resulting in death. Unlike pesticides that inhibit molting, this drug has the opposite mechanism of action and can be applied throughout the entire larval stage of the pest.
Methoxyfenozide is primarily used to control the larvae of lepidopteran pests, such as the beet armyworm, cabbage looper, cotton bollworm, leafminer moth, fall webworm, pine caterpillar, inchworm, and rice stem borer. Applicable crops include cruciferous vegetables, solanaceous vegetables, melons, cotton, apples, peaches, rice, and forest trees.
Methoxyfenozide is a dihydrazide insect growth regulator, belonging to IRAC Group 18 molting hormone receptor agonists. It primarily controls pests by inducing premature molting in lepidopteran larvae. It exhibits strong selectivity against pests such as cutworms, leafrollers, stem borers, and inchworms, and is suitable for fruit trees, vegetables, rice, soybeans, cotton, and nuts. Compared to some broad-spectrum neurotoxic insecticides, methoxyfenozide has relatively less impact on beneficial insects and pollinators, thus maintaining stable value in integrated pest management, green control, and resistance rotation programs.
Future demand will primarily be concentrated in high-value cash crop markets in Asia, North America, Latin America, and Oceania. The United States currently retains methoxyfenozide products such as Intrepid 2F, and the EPA has approved its use in rice, legumes, cotton, and several fruit and vegetable crop groups, indicating that this ingredient still has a basis for expanded registration and existing market demand. As lepidopteran pests develop increasing resistance to pesticides, methoxyfenozide, as a Group 18 pesticide with a relatively independent mechanism of action, will be used more often in rotation or combination with diamides, abamectins, biopesticides, and other products with different mechanisms of action, rather than being used continuously alone.
