Compared with conventional silicon diaphragm sensors, metal diaphragm pressure sensors are better suited for harsh media, high pressure, hydraulic systems, refrigeration, food and pharmaceutical processing, chemical industries, construction machinery, hydrogen energy, oil and gas, and process industries. For example, WIKA’s S-11 flush diaphragm pressure transmitter is clearly designed for viscous, paste-like, crystallizing, particle-containing, and contaminated media, helping to avoid clogging issues commonly associated with traditional pressure ports.
From a supply-side perspective, metal diaphragm pressure sensors represent a mature but continuously upgrading industrial sensor segment. European and U.S. companies have clear advantages in high-reliability industrial, aerospace, hygienic, hydrogen, and process industry applications, while Chinese manufacturers such as Micro Sensor, Nanjing Wotian, and GOVA are rapidly filling gaps in industrial pressure sensing cells, compact pressure transmitters, and domestic substitution markets. The latter directly forms a thin-film strain structure on a stainless steel diaphragm, offering features such as an all-welded structure, vibration resistance, good long-term stability, and suitability for high-pressure and harsh operating conditions. In hydrogen applications, Trafag emphasizes that the key components of its pressure transmitters are based on thin-film-on-steel technology and use a fully welded, O-ring-free structure. From the demand side, growth is mainly driven by industrial automation, hydraulic system upgrades, refrigeration and heat pumps, hydrogen energy, hygienic processes in food and pharmaceuticals, chemical safety monitoring, and water utility digitalization. Compared with consumer-grade MEMS pressure sensors, metal diaphragm pressure sensors have lower shipment volumes but higher unit prices. Compared with large process pressure transmitters, they are more oriented toward OEM embedded applications and compact industrial sensor markets. Future competition will evolve around five main directions. First, flush diaphragm and hygienic structures will continue to grow in food, pharmaceutical, and viscous-media applications. Second, hydrogen energy and high-pressure gas applications will drive demand for titanium alloys, Hastelloy, coatings, and fully welded structures. Third, metal thin-film products will upgrade toward higher overload resistance, wider temperature ranges, and lower drift. Fourth, IO-Link, CAN, digital outputs, and smart diagnostic functions will penetrate further into industrial OEM applications. Fifth, Chinese local suppliers will expand their share in mid- to low-end industrial pressure sensing cells and transmitters, but they still need to improve materials, welding, long-term stability, and certification capabilities in high-end hygienic, hydrogen, and aerospace applications.
