Metal-Air Fuel Cells, also known as Metal-Air Batteries, are a type of energy storage device that generate electricity through a chemical reaction between a metal and atmospheric oxygen. Unlike traditional batteries that store energy within their internal electrodes, metal-air fuel cells rely on external air as the source of oxygen to generate electricity. This makes metal-air fuel cells much lighter and more compact compared to traditional batteries with the same energy storage capacity.
The most common types of metal-air fuel cells are zinc-air and aluminum-air fuel cells. These cells work by oxidizing the metal anode, releasing electrons and generating electricity. The metal anode is then restored to its original state through a recharging process that replaces the metal oxide with fresh metal.
Metal-air fuel cells have several advantages over traditional batteries, including higher energy density, longer operational life, and lower cost. However, they also have some limitations, including lower efficiency and higher susceptibility to corrosion and degradation.
