Liquid LiFSI concentrate is a high-concentration lithium-salt feedstock prepared by dissolving battery-grade lithium bisfluorosulfonimide in high-purity ethyl methyl carbonate, dimethyl carbonate or another compatible electrolyte solvent. Commercial products generally contain approximately 25% to 35% LiFSI by weight, with a concentration of around 30% representing a common industrial specification. Pure LiFSI is a solid at ambient temperature; therefore, the product is neither neat liquid LiFSI nor molten LiFSI, but a concentrated solution containing LiFSI as the active component.
Liquid LiFSI concentrate is supplied to electrolyte and battery manufacturers for further dilution, blending and formulation with other lithium salts and functional additives. It is used in electrolytes for traction batteries, energy-storage batteries, consumer batteries and next-generation battery systems and may function as an additive, a co-salt or a primary electrolyte-salt feedstock. Finished formulated electrolytes, dilute laboratory solutions and specialized research electrolytes combining LiFSI with ionic liquids are excluded from this product category. In 2025, global shipments of Liquid LiFSI Concentrate are estimated at approximately 110,000 tons, with a price of approximately US$5,800 per ton and a gross margin of approximately 15% to 28%.
The Liquid LiFSI concentrate market is transitioning from a premium functional-additive segment toward large-scale lithium-salt supply. High-nickel cathodes, silicon-carbon anodes, 800-volt fast-charging systems, long-cycle energy storage and semi-solid batteries require stronger ionic conductivity, low-temperature performance, interfacial stability and thermal stability. These requirements are increasing the proportion of LiFSI used in electrolyte formulations. LiFSI is still predominantly blended with LiPF6, but its role is gradually expanding from a low-dose additive to a co-salt and a higher-ratio component of dual-salt electrolyte systems.
Compared with high-purity solid LiFSI, the liquid concentrate route can reduce crystallization, filtration, deep drying, powder packaging and downstream redissolution. This lowers energy consumption, moisture exposure and contamination risk and supports automated metering, pipeline transfer and continuous blending at large electrolyte plants. The liquid route is particularly suitable for vertically integrated lithium-salt, electrolyte and battery-material companies using captive or nearby supply, enabling Chinese producers to establish advantages in industrial capacity, cost control and customer qualification.
Competition will increasingly shift from announced capacity toward pure-LiFSI-equivalent cost, active concentration, moisture, free acid, metal-ion impurities, solvent purity and batch consistency. Because a substantial portion of the shipped product is solvent, long-distance transportation is less economical than for solid LiFSI, while fixed solvent and concentration specifications reduce formulation flexibility for customers. Liquid LiFSI concentrate is expected to maintain strong growth in high-volume traction and energy-storage electrolyte markets, while high-purity crystalline LiFSI will retain strategic importance in exports, primary-salt applications, highly concentrated electrolytes and next-generation solvent systems. The two product forms are therefore expected to coexist rather than fully replace one another.
