According to our (Global Info Research) latest study, the global Liquid Crystal on Silicon (LCOS) Microdisplays market size was valued at US$ 500 million in 2025 and is forecast to a readjusted size of US$ 1044 million by 2032 with a CAGR of 11.0% during review period.
Liquid Crystal on Silicon (LCOS) Microdisplays are miniature reflective display devices built on CMOS active-matrix silicon backplanes and integrated with reflective pixel electrodes, a liquid-crystal layer, alignment structures, transparent cover glass and basic packaging. Depending on the delivery form, the microdisplay may further incorporate display drivers, frame memory, FPCs, controller electronics or elementary illumination components. Polarized light generated by an external LED or laser source enters the liquid-crystal layer, where pixel-level voltages alter the orientation of the liquid-crystal molecules to modulate light intensity, polarization or phase. The modulated light is then reflected by the silicon-based pixel electrodes to form an image.
Because pixel-driving circuits and metal interconnects can be positioned beneath the reflective pixels, LCoS microdisplays can achieve small pixel pitches, high fill factors, high resolution, limited screen-door effects and smooth image continuity. Sony SXRD, JVC D-ILA and the LCoS products supplied by Himax, OMNIVISION and RAONTECH represent different architectures and integration levels within the LCoS microdisplay category.
The upstream value chain includes silicon wafers and semiconductor foundries, CMOS backplane design, liquid-crystal materials, cover glass, alignment films, sealants, display drivers, memory, FPCs, PCBs, LED or laser sources, polarizing materials and packaging equipment. LCoS microdisplays occupy the core-device and functional-integration layer between microdisplay chips and complete optical engines. Downstream applications include AR glasses, head-up displays, pico projectors, home-theater and professional projection, industrial imaging, medical displays and simulation systems.
Global shipments and deliveries of Liquid Crystal on Silicon (LCOS) Microdisplays were approximately 3.8 million units in 2025, with a shipment-weighted FOB price of approximately US$128 per unit and a gross margin of approximately 30% to 47%.
LCoS Microdisplays Evolve From Projection Devices Into Near-Eye Display Platforms
The LCoS microdisplay market is evolving from a device category dominated by home-theater, professional and pico projection into a multi-application market supported by projection, AR near-eye displays, automotive HUDs and industrial imaging. Traditional projection remains an important revenue base. Sony SXRD and JVC D-ILA maintain strong positions in premium projection through high contrast, native 4K resolution and three-panel RGB architectures, while Himax, OMNIVISION, RAONTECH and emerging Chinese suppliers are focusing on smaller, lower-power and more highly integrated products for AR glasses and HUDs.
AR is expected to be the fastest-growing application, but commercialization depends on device weight, optical efficiency, power consumption and compatibility with waveguides. LCoS is not self-emissive and requires illumination and polarization optics. OMNIVISION integrates drivers and frame memory into single-chip panels, Himax incorporates panels, illumination and control circuitry into front-lit microdisplays, and RAONTECH provides panels, controllers and optical-engine modules. The transition from standalone panels to integrated microdisplay platforms is expected to increase product value and concentrate capabilities in CMOS design, liquid-crystal packaging, driver algorithms, illumination synchronization and optical co-development.
The main risks are technology substitution, optical efficiency and capacity utilization. Micro OLED provides self-emission and high contrast for premium near-eye displays, Micro LED is a long-term candidate for lightweight AR, and DLP retains a mature projection ecosystem. LCoS suppliers must reduce pixel pitch, improve liquid-crystal response, increase reflectivity and lower system power consumption while controlling manufacturing yield and system cost.
