LIC supercapacitors are asymmetric hybrid electrochemical energy storage devices. The positive electrode typically uses activated carbon or other porous carbon materials, storing charge through electrical double-layer adsorption. The negative electrode typically uses pre-lithiated graphite, hard carbon, or other lithium-intercalated carbon materials, storing energy through the insertion and extraction of lithium ions. Pre-lithiation reduces the negative electrode potential, allowing LICs to achieve higher single-cell operating voltages and energy densities than traditional double-layer supercapacitors. Commercial LIC cells typically have rated voltages of approximately 3.5 to 4.0 V and capacities ranging from over 4,000 F, combining fast charging and discharging, high power density, long cycle life, low self-discharge, and high safety. Compared to traditional EDLCs, LICs offer higher operating voltages and energy densities; compared to lithium-ion batteries, they have shorter continuous energy storage times but superior peak power, cycle life, and fast charging performance. They are primarily used in smart meters, IoT terminals, industrial power outage protection, voltage drop compensation, rail transit energy recovery, automated logistics equipment, and short-term high-power energy storage. Global production of lithium-ion supercapacitors (LICs) is projected to reach approximately 5.25 million units by 2025, with an average price of around $6 per unit and a gross margin of approximately 27%.
The lithium-ion supercapacitor market is rapidly upgrading from traditional applications such as smart meters and small backup power supplies to high-reliability short-term energy storage and high-frequency power regulation platforms. The periodic peak loads generated by AI server training and inference necessitate rack-mount energy storage devices with millisecond-level response times, high-frequency cycling capability, and predictable lifespans for data centers. Demand for transient voltage dip mitigation is also rapidly increasing in semiconductor manufacturing, grid-sensitive loads, and high-end industrial equipment. Simultaneously, the long standby time requirements of rail transit braking energy recovery, rapid power replenishment for AGVs and AMRs, port equipment, and smart meters and remote trackers are continuously expanding the downstream application boundaries of LICs. Leading cell manufacturers are collaborating with power system vendors to develop capacitor energy storage systems and are expanding their large-capacity square cell production lines, indicating that the market is moving from product verification to large-scale commercial deployment.
However, industry expansion still faces significant technological and commercial barriers. While LIC (Lithium Iron Phosphate) batteries have a significantly higher energy density than traditional double-layer capacitors, they are still lower than mainstream lithium-ion batteries, making them unsuitable for long-term energy storage at the hourly level. Their negative electrode pre-lithiation, water content control, electrolyte matching, and interfacial film stability directly affect product consistency, cycle life, and manufacturing yield. LIC batteries typically require a minimum operating voltage and the configuration of cell balancing and state monitoring systems in series modules, increasing system design complexity. Meanwhile, lithium iron phosphate batteries, traditional supercapacitors, and high-rate lithium batteries are creating competitive substitution across different power and time ranges. The industry also faces risks such as inconsistent product names and market statistics boundaries, long customer certification cycles, and concentrated supply of key materials.
The future market will exhibit a clear trend towards product polarization. Small-capacity (3.5 to 4.2 V, 10 to 200 F) products will continue to serve smart meters, IoT terminals, locators, energy harvesting, and embedded power-loss protection, with competition focusing on miniaturization, low leakage current, and cost control. Large-capacity (500 to 3000 F) square or cylindrical products will increasingly enter AI server racks, industrial voltage dip compensation, rail transportation, and heavy-duty mobile equipment, with competition shifting towards low internal resistance, thermal management, system safety, and lifespan assurance. Downstream customers will also gradually shift from simply purchasing battery cells to purchasing certified modules, rack-mounted energy storage devices, and complete power systems.
