A large-size TFT-LCD (thin-film-transistor liquid-crystal display) is an active-matrix LCD panel—typically used in TVs, monitors, notebooks, and increasingly automotive cockpit screens—where each pixel is driven by its own thin-film transistor array deposited on a glass substrate to precisely control brightness and color. “Large size” generally refers to display panels made on large motherglass sheets and then cut into big diagonals (often ≥10 inches, and especially the TV/monitor class), which emphasizes manufacturing scale, uniformity, and yield management. These panels typically combine a TFT backplane (a-Si, LTPS, or oxide), liquid-crystal layer with color filters, and an LED backlight (sometimes with local dimming such as Mini-LED) to deliver high-resolution images over a large viewing area. The annual shipment volume for this product is approximately 0.5 billion units. The average unit price ranges from US$30 to US$120 per unit, and the gross profit margin for this product is between 15% and 20%.
The TFT-LCD panel supply chain starts upstream with specialty materials (alkali-free glass substrates, liquid crystal mixtures, color-filter materials, photoresists, polarizers, alignment layers, sealants/spacers), electronic materials (ITO/metal films, sputtering targets, wet chemicals, process gases), and capital equipment for large-area microfabrication (deposition/sputter, photolithography, etch/clean, anneal, inspection/metrology) plus cell and module assembly tooling (rubbing, bonding, cutting, driver IC attach). Midstream panel makers run the TFT array and color-filter fabs, then assemble the LC “cell” and typically hand off to module integrators that add the backlight unit (LEDs, light guide plate, diffuser/prism films), driver electronics, and sometimes touch/cover glass. Downstream demand is concentrated in OEMs and brand owners across TVs, monitors, laptops/tablets, smartphones (where TFT variants like LTPS/oxide matter), automotive displays, and industrial/medical signage—channels that increasingly expect panel suppliers to support qualification, reliability testing, and integrated module solutions.
TFT-LCD is a mature, scale-driven technology, so competition is intense and often cyclical, with profits hinging on yield, utilization, and product mix rather than basic capability. The strategic “escape” from commoditization is happening through higher-spec niches: larger and higher-resolution IT panels, high-refresh gaming/PC displays, and especially automotive where long lifetime, high brightness, and burn-in resistance favor LCD—often paired with Mini-LED local dimming to narrow the perceived gap to OLED. Technologically, differentiation is shifting toward backplane choices (a-Si vs LTPS vs oxide), optical performance (contrast, low reflectance, narrow bezel), power efficiency, and tighter integration (touch, cover lens, thin modules), while OLED remains the main substitution threat at the premium end. At the same time, geopolitics, customer concentration (a few giant OEMs), and sustainability pressures (energy use, chemicals, recycling) are pushing the industry toward deeper partnerships, vertical integration, and selective capacity discipline rather than “more volume at any cost.”
