According to our (Global Info Research) latest study, the global Isostearic Acid for Lubricants market size was valued at US$ 172 million in 2025 and is forecast to a readjusted size of US$ 252 million by 2032 with a CAGR of 5.5% during review period.
Global sales of isostearic acid for lubricants reached 22,800 tons in 2025, with an average price of US$7,347 per ton.
Isostearic acid for lubricants is a type of synthetic base oil or functional additive primarily composed of branched C18 fatty acids. It is produced through the catalytic hydrogenation and isomerization reactions of natural unsaturated fatty acids (such as oleic acid and ricinoleic acid). Its molecular structure is a methyl-branched octadecanoic acid, possessing unique properties such as a low pour point, high viscosity index, and excellent thermal oxidative stability and shear stability. Compared to traditional straight-chain fatty acids, its branched structure endows it with the ability to remain liquid at low temperatures, while also providing good lubricity and metal surface adsorption. In the lubricant industry, isostearic acid can be used alone as a synthetic base oil, or it can be used to prepare isostearate lubricants through esterification, or added to mineral or synthetic oils as an oiliness agent or friction modifier. It is widely used in high-end lubrication applications such as automotive engine oils, industrial gear oils, compressor oils, and metalworking fluids.
The raw material system for lubricant-grade isostearic acid uses natural vegetable oils as the core starting material, mainly derived from renewable resources such as castor oil (primarily produced in India and China), palm oil (Southeast Asia), and rapeseed oil (Europe and Canada). Unsaturated fatty acids (such as oleic acid and ricinoleic acid) are converted into branched isostearic acid through a high-pressure hydrogenation-isomerization process. During production, the vegetable oil is first hydrogenated to saturation under the action of a nickel or precious metal catalyst, and then undergoes skeletal isomerization on an acidic catalyst (such as a molecular sieve) to form C18 fatty acids with methyl branches. Finally, it is purified to lubricant-grade specifications (acid value typically controlled at 190-200 mgKOH/g, color <200 APHA) through vacuum distillation and molecular distillation.
In terms of cost structure, raw material costs account for the largest share (approximately 60-70%). Castor oil, in particular, is significantly affected by monsoon climates and export policies due to its global supply being concentrated in India (accounting for over 90% of global production). Energy consumption and catalyst consumption are major factors in processing costs, especially high-precision isomerization, which requires expensive molecular sieve catalysts and high-pressure reaction equipment. Furthermore, quality control and certification costs are increasing. To meet API, ACEA, and other lubricant specifications, as well as biodegradability certifications (such as OECD 301B), companies need to invest heavily in product testing and sustainable supply chain audits. Compared to petrochemical-based synthetic fatty acids, natural-based isostearic acid enjoys a premium in European and American markets due to its renewable raw materials and good biodegradability (28-day biodegradation rate >60%), but its production costs are correspondingly 20-30% higher.
