According to our (Global Info Research) latest study, the global Isoprene Monomer market size was valued at US$ 2449 million in 2025 and is forecast to a readjusted size of US$ 3256 million by 2032 with a CAGR of 4.2% during review period.
In 2025, global sales volume for isoprene monomer is projected to reach 840,000 tons, with an average price of $2,835 per ton.
Isoprene Monomer or 2-methyl-1, 3-butadiene, is a common organic compound with the formula CH2=C(CH3)CH=CH2. In its pure form, it is a colorless volatile liquid.
Global isoprene monomer key players include Nizhnekamskneftekhim, Tatneft, Synthez-Kauchuk, Shell, JSR, etc. Global top 5 players hold a share about 45%. Europe is the largest market, with a share about 45%, followed by Asia-Pacific and North America, having share about 30% and 20%.
The raw material sources and cost structures for isoprene production vary significantly depending on the specific manufacturing process employed. The core feedstock for the dominant C5 fraction extraction method is the cracked C5 fraction—a byproduct of ethylene cracking units. Within this fraction, isoprene typically accounts for approximately 15% to 20% of the content, while other reactive components—such as piperylene and cyclopentadiene—collectively constitute 40% to 55% of the total C5 volume. In the cost structure of this process, raw materials represent the largest expenditure; the price of the C5 fraction is directly influenced by naphtha prices and the operating rates of ethylene cracking units. Energy consumption ranks as the second-largest cost factor, as the extractive distillation process requires substantial quantities of steam and electricity for solvent recovery and separation operations; furthermore, the loss and recovery efficiency of solvents—such as DMF or acetonitrile—have a significant impact on overall costs. Additionally, the substantial capital investment required for the facility and the complexity of the separation workflow (which necessitates multiple stages of extractive distillation and refining steps, such as hydrogenation to remove alkynes) result in high depreciation and labor costs. Moreover, impurities like cyclopentadiene are prone to polymerization, which can cause equipment clogging and consequently drive up maintenance costs. In contrast, the isobutylene-formaldehyde method (also known as the "isobutylene-aldehyde route") utilizes isobutylene and formaldehyde as raw materials. While the unit price of isobutylene is relatively high—averaging approximately 7,100 RMB per ton—formaldehyde is an inexpensive feedstock. This process boasts a reaction conversion rate exceeding 70%, and its byproducts can be co-produced with high-value-added products such as MTBE. Despite the higher unit cost of its primary feedstock, the method benefits from excellent atomic economy and yields a product of high purity (characterized by extremely low impurity levels); consequently, the overall production cost is approximately 30% lower than that of the C5 extraction method. Furthermore, this process does not rely on the infrastructure of ethylene cracking units, offering greater flexibility in raw material procurement. Currently, biological methods utilize sugars—such as glucose—as a carbon source; consequently, raw material costs are subject to fluctuations in agricultural product prices. However, the fermentation process eliminates the need for complex separation and purification steps, thereby offering the potential for reduced costs in the long run.
