It decomposes upon heating to generate free radicals; at room temperature, it exists as a colorless, transparent liquid. It is primarily utilized in the polymer materials industry to initiate the polymerization of various monomers (such as vinyl chloride, vinyl acetate, etc.).
Key upstream raw materials include 2-ethylhexanol, phosgene (or 2-ethylhexyl chloroformate), hydrogen peroxide, and sodium hydroxide. Traditional manufacturing processes typically involve first synthesizing 2-ethylhexyl chloroformate from 2-ethylhexanol and phosgene, followed by a reaction with hydrogen peroxide and a base to produce EHP. Given that the peroxidation reaction is exothermic and the product exhibits relatively low thermal stability, quality control is a critical priority across all stages—including production, dilution, emulsification, packaging, and cold-chain storage and transportation. Downstream applications primarily involve polymerization systems for materials such as PVC, LDPE, EVA, polyvinylidene chloride resins, acrylates, and methacrylates.
