In silicon carbide (SiC) manufacturing, the dominant configuration is an induction-heated Physical Vapor Transport (PVT) furnace, where polycrystalline SiC is heated to very high temperatures and sublimates; vapor species are then transported and deposited onto a seed to form a SiC single crystal boule.
Upstream inputs mainly include the RF/MF power supply and matching network, water-cooled copper induction coil, vacuum/controlled-atmosphere process chamber, and a graphite hot set (crucible, lids, insulation such as graphite felt/foam), plus vacuum pumping, inert-gas/partial-pressure control hardware, sensors (e.g., pyrometry), interlocks, and PLC/MES-ready automation. In production PVT platforms, suppliers typically highlight RF induction heating (kHz range) and coil motion/positioning as key enablers for thermal-gradient control and repeatable crystal growth.
Downstream, these furnaces are used by SiC crystal growers and wafer manufacturers to produce large-diameter SiC boules, which are subsequently sliced, ground, and polished into substrates/wafers. Those wafers enable power electronics (e.g., SiC MOSFETs/diodes) and RF/microwave devices (semi-insulating SiC substrates), supporting EV traction inverters, fast-charging infrastructure, renewable-energy/grid power conversion, and high-frequency communications.
