A hydrogen turboexpander is a device that utilizes the expansion of high-pressure hydrogen gas to produce mechanical work. It is a type of turbine specifically designed to operate with hydrogen as the working fluid.
The principle of operation of a hydrogen turboexpander is based on the Joule-Thomson effect, which states that a gas experiences a temperature change when it expands through a restriction while maintaining constant enthalpy. In the case of a turboexpander, high-pressure hydrogen is passed through a series of nozzles or blades, causing it to expand rapidly. This expansion converts the pressure energy of the hydrogen into kinetic energy, which drives a turbine rotor.
The turbine rotor is connected to a shaft and, in turn, drives a generator or other mechanical equipment. As the hydrogen expands and flows through the turbine, it loses pressure and temperature. The exhaust hydrogen gas is typically cooled and compressed before being fed into another process or recycled.
