According to our (Global Info Research) latest study, the global HVDC XLPE Insulation Materials market size was valued at US$ 105 million in 2025 and is forecast to a readjusted size of US$ 177 million by 2032 with a CAGR of 7.8% during review period.
HVDC XLPE Insulation Material refers to cross-linked polyethylene-based primary insulation material used in high-voltage direct-current power cables, also known as DC-XLPE insulation compounds. It is mainly used in ±320 kV, ±400 kV and ±500/525 kV land and submarine HVDC cable systems. The material is typically based on high-purity PE/LDPE base resin, peroxide curing systems, antioxidants, DC stabilizers and clean packaging systems, with strict control over impurities, gels, ionic residues and particle contamination during compounding, pelletizing, packing and logistics. Compared with XLPE materials for HV/EHV AC cables, HVDC XLPE requires lower DC conductivity, stronger space-charge suppression, better thermal stability, polarity-reversal performance, long-term electrical ageing resistance and lower degassing burden. Upstream materials include high-purity polyethylene base resin, crosslinking agents, antioxidants, DC stabilizers, clean packaging and dedicated compounding equipment; downstream applications include offshore wind export systems, cross-sea transmission, cross-border interconnectors, land long-distance HVDC transmission and renewable energy export projects.
In 2025, global HVDC XLPE insulation materials production reached approximately 25 kilotons, with an average global market price is $4,000 per ton.
From a global industry perspective, HVDC XLPE insulation material has evolved from conventional AC XLPE insulation into a specialized dielectric material for HVDC cable systems. Unlike AC cable insulation, which mainly focuses on AC breakdown, dielectric loss, partial discharge and thermal aging, HVDC cable insulation operates under DC electric field, temperature gradients, load cycles, polarity reversal and space-charge accumulation. Therefore, DC conductivity, space-charge suppression, temperature dependence and interface-field stability are especially critical. CIGRE TB 852 provides testing recommendations for DC extruded cable systems up to and including 800kV, covering both land and submarine fixed installations, and includes crosslinked polyolefins within the scope of extruded insulation materials, showing that HVDC extruded insulation systems are moving toward higher voltage levels and stricter qualification frameworks.
In terms of industry trends, HVDC XLPE insulation material is moving toward lower conductivity, reduced space charge, higher cleanliness, lower by-products, faster degassing, stronger electrical-tree resistance, longer lifetime and higher-voltage compatibility. In HVDC cables, small contaminants, gels, crosslinking by-products, metallic particles or interface defects can distort local electric-field distribution and, under long-term DC stress, trigger space-charge accumulation, field enhancement and insulation aging. Research shows that temperature and electric field are important factors affecting space-charge accumulation in HVDC XLPE cable insulation, and the steady-state current of XLPE can increase significantly as temperature rises, which means material design must control both conductivity level and temperature sensitivity. Crosslinking and degassing are also important because crosslinking by-products affect resistivity and conductivity; once these by-products are removed, XLPE becomes more insulating, supporting better HVDC insulation performance. Cable manufacturing is therefore upgrading toward clean feeding, triple-layer co-extrusion, dry curing, inline defect inspection, optimized degassing and stricter space-charge and withstand-voltage testing.
The main growth drivers come from three areas. First, long-distance renewable power export, offshore wind grid connection, cross-regional interconnection, island power supply and large-capacity HVDC transmission projects are increasing demand for highly reliable XLPE insulation materials. Second, insulation failure in HVDC cables can cause long route outages, submarine-cable repair challenges, high intervention costs and system-level power impacts, so project owners and cable manufacturers place stronger emphasis on space-charge control, stable DC conductivity, cleanliness, degassing efficiency, prequalification testing and operating track records. Third, DC cable systems are moving toward higher voltage, larger capacity, longer installation distance and more complex land and submarine environments, pushing HVDC XLPE insulation materials from ordinary cross-linked polyethylene toward dedicated DC-grade, low-defect, low-conductivity, traceable and highly consistent material systems.
