A high-power relay is an electrical control device that triggers a predetermined step change in the controlled output circuit when the input (such as current or voltage) meets specified criteria, thereby functioning as an "automatic switch" that uses a low-level current to control the operation of a high-level current. These relays are typically defined by their ability to switch high voltages (≥250V AC/DC) and high currents (≥10A), serving functions such as automatic regulation, safety protection, and circuit switching. Their core structure comprises an electromagnetic coil (generating a magnetic field to actuate the armature), a contact system (using silver or copper alloys to carry high currents), a spring return mechanism, and an insulating housing; they operate via electromagnetic induction to achieve electro-magnetic-mechanical control conversion.
The raw material system for high-power relays is highly concentrated in two main categories: metal materials and engineering plastics. Key raw materials include: contact materials (silver alloy or silver tin oxide [AgSnO₂]—the most critical materials, determining current-carrying capacity and arc life); copper (enameled coil wire and conductive terminals, accounting for approximately 21% of raw material costs); iron (magnetic yokes, armatures, springs, and other magnetic/structural components, accounting for about 7%); engineering plastics (housings, bases, and bobbins—requiring flame retardancy, heat resistance, and insulation properties—accounting for about 20% of raw material costs); and enameled wire (for electromagnetic coil windings). Among these, silver—the core contact material—is expensive and subject to significant price volatility, making it the largest variable in relay costs; copper prices are heavily influenced by commodity markets; and engineering plastics primarily consist of PA66, PBT, and PPS, which must meet UL94 V-0 flame retardancy standards. While domestic supplies of upstream metal materials (silver, copper, iron) and engineering plastics are stable, high-end silver alloy contact materials still rely partially on imports.
In terms of cost structure, high-power relays are a classic example of products where raw material costs are the dominant factor. Based on cost data from leading global relay manufacturers, raw materials account for as much as 74.4% of total costs. Within this category, silver materials (contacts/silver wire) represent 36% of raw material costs, followed by copper (21%), engineering plastics (20%), enameled wire (16%), and iron materials (7%). Labor costs account for approximately 13.7%, and manufacturing overheads account for approximately 11.9%.
