High Performance CdTe Power Generation Glass is a photovoltaic product that uses cadmium telluride (CdTe) or cadmium telluride selenide (CdSeTe) thin films as the core light-absorbing layer and glass as the main substrate and encapsulation carrier. Its cell structure typically includes conductive glass, a transparent conductive layer, a semiconductor functional layer, a back contact layer, and electrodes. These are formed through thin film deposition, material processing, and laser scribing to create a series cell structure, which is then encapsulated, edge-sealed, and electrically connected to create modules or building-integrated photovoltaic (BIPV) glass. CdTe material has strong light absorption capabilities, enabling photoelectric conversion with a relatively thin semiconductor layer, making it a major commercial thin-film photovoltaic technology. Modern CdTe cells often incorporate CdSeTe material to improve spectral absorption and device performance.
CdTe photovoltaics have developed into two main product forms: standard modules and building-integrated photovoltaic (BIPV) products. Standard CdTe modules are characterized by standard sizes, opacity, and large-scale manufacturing, primarily targeting ground-mounted power plants and photovoltaic systems that do not serve as building envelopes. CdTe photovoltaic glass serves both as a power generation and building component, primarily used in curtain walls, facades, roofs, skylights, canopies, shading, balustrades, and transportation infrastructure.
Building-integrated photovoltaics (BIPV) products must possess both photovoltaic and building product attributes. After BIPV components are removed, the building must be replaced with traditional building components with the same function. Photovoltaic products installed only on existing roofs or wall surfaces and not replacing building materials are considered building-integrated photovoltaics (BAPV) and not BIPV. IEC 63092-1 covers the requirements for BIPV components used as building products, while IEC 63092-2 covers BIPV requirements at the installation structure and system levels.
CdTellin photovoltaic glass combines the attributes of thin-film photovoltaic manufacturing and architectural glass processing. Manufacturing capabilities typically cover conductive glass processing, semiconductor deposition, material activation, back contact, laser scribing, encapsulation, edge sealing, testing, and electrical connections; architectural products also involve processing steps such as lamination, insulated glass, coloring, patterning, irregular shapes, and structural connections. Semi-transparent and colored products typically have lower W/m², but higher product value per unit area and building system value.
