Hexahydrophthalic anhydride (HHPA for short) is a white to off-white crystalline low melting point solid that is hygroscopic. ‌ It is miscible with various organic solvents such as benzene, toluene, acetone, etc., but is slightly soluble in petroleum ether. Hexahydrophthalic anhydride is solid at room temperature, but solidifies into a glassy solid at 35-36°C. Inhalation of hexahydrophthalic anhydride is toxic and highly irritating to skin and eyes. The synthesis method of hexahydrophthalic anhydride is mainly produced by high-pressure hydrogenation of tetrahydrophthalic anhydride under catalytic conditions. It has many uses in industry.
The upstream segment primarily relies on basic coal chemical and petrochemical products. The core raw materials are maleic anhydride and butadiene, which are synthesized into the intermediate tetrahydrophthalic anhydride (THPA) through a Diels-Alder reaction. This is then followed by a hydrogenation reaction under the action of a catalyst to produce hexahydrophthalic anhydride.
Global sales in 2025 are projected to be approximately 25,000 tons, with an average market price of around US$1450 per ton. The industry's gross profit margin is in the range of 15%-30%.
With the digitalization of power equipment and the emergence of new optoelectronic detection devices, hexahydrophthalic anhydride (especially high-purity, low-color liquid varieties) has demonstrated its advantages in the field of epoxy resin curing agents.
Compared with traditional amine curing agents, anhydride curing agents (such as HHPA) have a longer pot life and lower skin irritation, aligning with current industrial policies of "green manufacturing" and "low-toxicity alternatives," and showing a clear advantage in replacing traditional materials, particularly in the high-end consumer electronics and optical-grade adhesive markets.
