The enriched gallium-69 can be made into high-purity metal, gallium-69 oxide, gallium-69 chloride, gallium-69 nitrate solutions, or pressed oxide targets. Targets for nuclear reactions also require weighing, deposition, pressing, sintering, encapsulation, and target backing material bonding, and require testing for isotope abundance, chemical purity, areal density, and uniformity. The most representative downstream application of gallium-69 is as an accelerator target, used to produce germanium-68 via the ⁶⁹Ga(p,2n)⁶⁸Ge reaction. Germanium-68 is then used in germanium-68/gallium-68 generators to provide gallium-68 for PET imaging in hospitals. Other applications include nuclear reaction cross-section measurement, detector calibration, gallium nuclear magnetic resonance, geochemistry and environmental tracing, and fundamental research on semiconductor materials such as gallium arsenide and gallium nitride with controllable isotopic composition.
The development of gallium-69 is primarily driven indirectly by the demand from germanium-68/gallium-68 generators and PET nuclear medicine. Gallium-69 enrichment can produce germanium-68 through the ⁶⁹Ga(p,2n)⁶⁸Ge reaction, and germanium-68 is the parent nuclide for germanium-68/gallium-68 generators, sustainably providing gallium-68 for PET imaging in prostate cancer, neuroendocrine tumors, and other fields. With the increasing use of targeted radiodiagnostic drugs, the demand for high-purity, low-impurity, and recyclable gallium targets from germanium-68 production facilities will continue to grow, creating a stable specialized market for enriched gallium-69.
The expansion of accelerator medical nuclide production capacity is another driver of gallium-69 demand growth. The construction of new medium- and high-energy proton accelerators and germanium-68 production lines requires optimization of gallium target heat dissipation, sealing, and beam current handling capabilities. Compared to natural gallium, enriched gallium-69 helps increase the effective atomic ratio of target nuclear reactions and reduces the risk of gallium-71 participating in other nuclear reactions and forming impurities. Future products will increasingly be supplied in the form of gallium-nickel alloy targets, sealed gallium metal targets, pressed gallium oxide targets, and customized areal density targets. The supply-side trend is to improve isotope separation efficiency and enhance target recycling. Since the abundance of gallium-69 in natural gallium already exceeds 60%, the economic benefits of further enriching it to over 99% need to be balanced with the cost of isotope separation.
