According to our (Global Info Research) latest study, the global Fluorine-Based Grease for Aerospace market size was valued at US$ 170 million in 2025 and is forecast to a readjusted size of US$ 248 million by 2032 with a CAGR of 5.2% during review period.
Global sales of fluorine-based greases for aerospace reached 536 tons in 2025, with an average price of $308/kg.
Aerospace fluorine-based greases are high-performance specialty lubricants made with perfluoropolyether (PFPE) or chlorofluorocarbon oils as base oils, combined with polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) or other fluorinated thickeners. These greases possess extreme temperature adaptability (-90℃ to above 300℃), chemical inertness (resistance to strong acids and alkalis, and oxidants), extremely low volatility, and excellent material compatibility. They are specifically designed for extreme aerospace operating conditions, including high vacuum, strong radiation, high speed and heavy load, and harsh environments with drastic temperature fluctuations. Their core molecular structure is a perfluorinated carbon-oxygen backbone (such as the Fomblin®, Krytox®, and Demnum® series), produced through photo-oxidation or anionic polymerization of perfluoroolefins, representing the highest level of lubrication technology.
The raw material system of fluorinated greases uses perfluoroolefins as the core monomers, mainly including hexafluoropropylene (HFP) and tetrafluoroethylene (TFE), which are converted into perfluoropolyether base oils through photo-oxidation or anionic polymerization. The thickener uses high-purity polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) micropowder (typically <5μm particle size) and requires special surface treatment to enhance compatibility with the base oil. The additive system includes solid lubricants such as fluorinated graphite and fluorinated mica, as well as antioxidants and rust inhibitors. All components require perfluorination to ensure chemical compatibility. The production process must be carried out in an anhydrous and oxygen-free environment with high cleanliness. The base oil synthesis involves photochemical reactions or high-pressure anionic polymerization, which is complex and results in low yields. The thickening process employs special dispersion technology to ensure uniform suspension of PTFE and prevent phase separation.
In terms of cost structure, raw material costs account for a very high proportion (approximately 70-80%), with perfluoroolefin monomers being expensive (hexafluoropropylene approximately 500,000-800,000 RMB/ton), and the monomer conversion rate during polymerization typically only reaching 60-80%. Among processing costs, energy consumption for photo-oxidation or anionic polymerization, equipment depreciation (requiring Hastelloy reactors resistant to fluorine corrosion), and the use of ultrapure solvents are the main factors.
