Dotinurad tablets belong to a class of medications known as selective uric acid reabsorption inhibitors.They are primarily prescribed for the treatment of hyperuricemia associated with gout.By blocking URAT1,Dotinurad increases the excretion of uric acid in the urine,thereby lowering blood uric acid levels and reducing the risk of urate crystal formation in joints and tissues.
Dotinurad is a first-in-class Selective Urate Reabsorption Inhibitor (SURI) that lowers serum uric acid levels by selectively inhibiting the URAT1 transporter in the renal proximal tubule, enhancing uric acid excretion. Developed by Eisai, it was first approved in Japan in 2020 and subsequently received marketing authorization in China in December 2024 under the brand name Urelice®. Compared to xanthine oxidase inhibitors like allopurinol and febuxostat, Dotinurad offers a differentiated safety and efficacy profile, particularly in patients with renal dysfunction or intolerance to XOIs. With over 10 million gout patients in China and limited treatment penetration, Dotinurad addresses a significant unmet clinical need. Its novel mechanism, favorable tolerability, and strategic positioning as the first SURI approved in China highlight its strong commercial potential and licensing value in the evolving urate-lowering therapy landscape.
