Controlled-release compound fertilizer is a granulated fertilizer that releases nutrients gradually into the soil (i.e., with a controlled release period). The slowness of the release is determined by the low solubility of the chemical compounds in the soil moisture. Since conventional fertilizers are soluble in water, the nutrients can disperse quickly as the fertilizer dissolves. Because controlled-release fertilizers are not water-soluble, their nutrients disperse into the soil more slowly. The fertilizer granules may have an insoluble substrate or a semi-permeable jacket that prevents dissolution while allowing nutrients to flow outward. Controlled-release fertilizers are also called coated or encapsulated fertilizers because the release is controlled by a polymer coating that contains a water-soluble fertilizer. Nutrients are released out of coated fertilizer through osmosis at a rate that is positively correlated with increased temperature.
The controlled-release compound fertilizer industry concentration is high; there are a few manufacturers in the world, and high-end products are mainly from Americas and Europe. In the world, giant manufactures mainly distribute in Americas and China such as ICL, Agrium, Kingenta and Haifa Chemicals.
Due to the limited downstream consumption of the controlled-release compound fertilizer, it has small production share in fertilizer field; there are a few companies which has several plants. In recent years, there were some companies which started to research and develop the product. The industry will form much high concentration of global market competition in future. At present, the top five companies account for around 60% of global market share in controlled-release compound fertilizer field.
After decades of development, the giant manufacturers have proven technique. The controlled-release compound fertilizer industry in China developed in about 1980s but the technology level of this product is not high. The manufacturers in China are mainly distributed in Shandong, Northeast of China which is near to the consumption areas.
