The glass is immersed in a bath of molten salts, typically potassium nitrate, at a temperature of about 300 °C (570 °F). This causes the sodium ions in the glass to be replaced by potassium ions from the bath. The potassium ions are larger than the sodium ions, so they create a compressive stress in the surface of the glass. This compressive stress makes the glass much stronger than it would be without it.
