According to our (Global Info Research) latest study, the global C4 Fraction market size was valued at US$ 19293 million in 2025 and is forecast to a readjusted size of US$ 24239 million by 2032 with a CAGR of 3.3% during review period.
C4 Fractions refer to industrial four-carbon hydrocarbon mixtures generated from steam cracking of naphtha, ethane, LPG or mixed light hydrocarbons, as well as from refinery FCC, gas fractionation, etherification and alkylation units. These streams typically contain 1,3-butadiene, isobutylene, 1-butene, cis/trans-2-butene, n-butane, isobutane and minor acetylene or C3/C5 impurities. They are normally handled as liquefied gases or pressurized liquids and serve as key intermediate feedstocks linking olefin crackers, refineries and downstream C4 upgrading units. Major product forms include crude C4, mixed C4s, butadiene feedstock, Raffinate-1, Raffinate-2, refinery C4 cuts and post-MTBE C4 streams. Their primary applications include butadiene extraction, isobutylene and MTBE production, 1-butene recovery, polybutene, alkylate gasoline, MEK/SBA routes and downstream synthetic rubber, resins and fuel blending value chains.
Based on our research, C4 Fractions should be understood as an intermediate stream system rather than a single standardized commodity. The practical market boundary covers crude C4, mixed C4s, Raffinate-1, Raffinate-2, refinery C4 cuts and post-MTBE C4 streams. The value of these streams comes from their separable and upgradeable components, particularly butadiene, isobutylene and butenes, while butanes and residual olefins contribute to fuel blending, alkylation and further upgrading routes. Because the yield and composition of C4 streams vary significantly by cracker feedstock, naphtha and mixed-feed crackers remain the most important sources of chemically valuable C4 streams, while ethane crackers tend to create less C4 and less butadiene flexibility.
On the demand side, butadiene extraction remains the most important value outlet for crude C4, with downstream demand linked to tires, synthetic rubber, ABS, SBS and other butadiene-based materials. Raffinate-1 and Raffinate-2 are directed into MTBE, isobutylene, 1-butene, polybutene, alkylation and related fuel or chemical routes. Regional fuel standards, MTBE regulations and gasoline demand trends create meaningful differences in the value of refinery C4 versus cracker C4. Over the long term, electric vehicle penetration may pressure fuel-oriented C4 applications, but high-performance tires, engineering plastics, specialty elastomers and chemical upgrading should continue to support the strategic value of C4 streams.
From a product and technology perspective, the industry is moving from by-product disposal toward integrated C4 valorization. Leading producers increasingly combine butadiene extraction, isobutylene recovery, 1-butene separation, MTBE/ETBE production, alkylation and selective hydrogenation to maximize value per tonne of C4. New Chinese and Middle Eastern refinery-petrochemical complexes are generally designed with downstream C4 utilization in mind, reducing low-value fuel use. In contrast, parts of Europe, Japan and South Korea face pressure from aging crackers, high energy costs and weak regional margins, making feedstock structure, downstream integration, logistics radius and asset flexibility the key sources of competitive advantage.
