Button cell (coin cell) battery recycling is a full-process standardized hazardous waste resource recovery system covering classified collection, safe storage, specialized transportation, sorting pretreatment, metallurgical/material separation, valuable metal extraction, harmless residue disposal and recycled material remanufacturing of waste button/coin batteries.
Button cells are miniature round disposable/rechargeable batteries widely used in watches, car key fobs, hearing aids, medical sensors, mainboard BIOS and wearable devices. Discarded units contain lithium, silver, zinc, manganese, heavy metals and toxic electrolytes; direct landfill causes soil/groundwater contamination, while damaged lithium coin cells risk short-circuit fire hazards.
The core goals of recycling:
1. Recycle high-value metals (silver, lithium, zinc, steel casing) for secondary industrial raw materials;
2. Isolate and treat toxic electrolytes and heavy metal waste to meet environmental compliance standards;
3. Eliminate fire, chemical leakage and ingestion safety risks in waste handling;
4. Implement extended producer responsibility (EPR) closed-loop battery lifecycle management.
Europe is one of the most regulated and mature markets. The EU Battery Regulation strengthens producer responsibility, collection, recycling-efficiency, and material-recovery requirements. EU rules set waste portable battery collection targets of 63% by the end of 2027 and 73% by the end of 2030, which directly supports collection of button and coin cells because they fall under the portable battery category.
North America is also a major market, led by the U.S. and Canada. The market is supported by retailer drop-off programs, municipal household hazardous waste systems, precious-metal refiners, and specialist battery recyclers. The U.S. EPA specifically advises consumers not to put button-cell, coin, or lithium single-use batteries in trash or municipal recycling bins and recommends using proper recycling locations.
Asia-Pacific is the largest consumption base for new button and coin cells and is likely the fastest-growing recycling opportunity. China, Japan, South Korea, India, and Southeast Asia have large demand from electronics, watches, toys, medical devices, hearing aids, smart meters, automotive keys, and IoT devices. Japan and South Korea have relatively mature battery collection systems, while China and Southeast Asia still have significant room to formalize household small-battery collection.
Latin America, Middle East, and Africa remain smaller and less standardized markets. Growth is mainly driven by urban waste regulation, electronics retail channels, hospital and hearing-aid waste streams, and environmental compliance by multinational brands.
