Bovine insulin is a protein hormone secreted by pancreatic beta cells in the bovine pancreas that regulates sugar metabolism. It belongs to the class of polypeptide substances. Its molecular structure consists of two peptide chains, A and B. Chain A contains 21 amino acids and chain B contains 30 amino acids. They are connected by disulfide bonds to form a double-chain molecule. It is one of the smallest proteins with a clear chemical structure. The hormone plays a role in lowering blood sugar by promoting the entry of glucose into cells and inhibiting glycogenolysis and gluconeogenesis, while participating in the regulation of fat and protein metabolism. Bovine insulin is similar in structure to human insulin, but there are two amino acid differences (alanine and valine at the 8th and 10th positions of the A chain, respectively), which may trigger an immune response. In the early days, due to biotechnology restrictions, bovine insulin was used as the main drug for the treatment of diabetes. Later, with the development of recombinant DNA technology, human insulin and insulin analogs gradually replaced its mainstream position due to lower immunogenicity and higher safety. Nowadays, bovine insulin is mostly used in scientific research.
