Bonded neodymium-iron-boron (NdFeB) magnets are strong magnets which are used for various applications. Epoxy coating is mostly common used for bonded NdFeB magnets; electroless nickel plating is also used to prevent corrosion. Isotropic bonded NdFeB material can be magnetized in any direction, or with multiple poles.
The main raw materials for bonded NdFeB include fast-quenched NdFeB magnetic powder (MQP isotropic magnetic powder) and polymer binders (thermosetting epoxy resin or thermoplastic engineering plastics), with the magnetic powder typically accounting for 85-95% by weight and the binder accounting for 5-15%. Because isotropic, rapidly quenched magnetic powder is used instead of anisotropic, sintered magnetic powder, and the magnet density is only about 80% of the theoretical value (approximately 4.5-6.0 g/cm³, far lower than the 7.4-7.6 g/cm³ of sintered magnets), the amount of rare earth metals used per unit of finished product is significantly reduced.
In terms of cost structure, NdFeB magnetic powder is the main cost source, typically accounting for 60-80% of the total cost. Its price is significantly affected by fluctuations in the market price of rare earth metals (neodymium, praseodymium, dysprosium, terbium). Binders (epoxy resin, nylon, and other engineering plastics) account for 10-20% of the cost; processing costs (molds, molding, curing, coating) account for 10-20%. Since the bonding process does not require secondary machining after sintering (such as wire cutting and grinding), processing losses are low, yield is high, and the overall manufacturing cost is significantly lower than that of sintered NdFeB. Furthermore, due to its magnetic properties being approximately one-fifth that of sintered NdFeB, its unit energy product cost is higher. However, it possesses an irreplaceable cost advantage in specific applications such as small, complex shapes and multi-pole magnetic rings.
