Bisphenol A (BPA) is an organic chemical compound with the molecular formula C₁₆H₁₈O₂. It is a key raw material used in the production of polycarbonate (PC) and epoxy resins. BPA consists of two phenol molecules connected by a propane group, and is widely used in the manufacturing of polycarbonate plastics, electronic housings, beverage bottles, and other products. The Bisphenol A for polycarbonate value chain starts from benzene, propylene, cumene, phenol and acetone, moves through high-purity BPA production and purification, and then flows into phosgene or non-phosgene polycarbonate resin manufacturing for applications in electronics, automotive, optical, medical, construction and consumer products.
Demand for BPA used in polycarbonate is mainly driven by the upgrading of engineering plastics, lightweight automotive materials, electrical and electronic applications, optical and medical transparent materials, and integrated PC value-chain expansion in Asia. Polycarbonate remains difficult to replace in applications such as automotive headlamps, electronic housings, connectors, optical lenses, medical-device housings and construction sheets because of its transparency, impact resistance, heat resistance, electrical insulation and dimensional stability. At the same time, new PC capacity in China, Korea and Southeast Asia supports captive and merchant BPA demand through integrated phenol/acetone–BPA–PC chains. However, tighter BPA-related regulation in food-contact and sensitive consumer applications in Europe and North America limits some low-end growth, pushing demand toward industrial, electronics, automotive, medical and higher-performance uses.
