Biofuels for transportation refer to liquid or gaseous fuels produced from biomass (crops, forestry waste, animal and vegetable oils, municipal organic waste, algae, etc.) through biological, chemical, or thermochemical processes. These fuels can be used directly or blended in road vehicles, ships, aircraft, and other transportation vehicles to replace fossil fuels such as gasoline, diesel, and jet fuel, achieving greenhouse gas emission reduction throughout their entire life cycle.
The raw material sources for biofuels for transportation are diverse, encompassing crops such as sugarcane, corn, rapeseed, and palm oil, as well as agricultural, forestry, and municipal organic waste such as straw, sawdust, and waste cooking oil. The price and availability of different raw materials vary significantly: traditional food crops (such as corn and sugarcane) have stable supplies but their prices are greatly affected by fluctuations in the grain market, while "second-generation" raw materials such as waste oil and crop residues have lower costs, but their collection systems are inadequate, resulting in high transportation and pre-treatment costs.
In terms of cost structure, raw material procurement typically accounts for 40–70% of the total cost, followed by energy consumption and conversion processes (approximately 20–30%), with the latter accounting for an even higher proportion in advanced processes such as cellulosic ethanol or gasification-Fischer-Tropsch jet fuel. The remaining 10–20% is for transportation, catalysts, and environmental treatment costs. Due to insufficient economies of scale and fragmented logistics, the total cost of biodiesel from waste oils and cellulosic ethanol from agricultural and forestry residues in China is currently 10–40% higher than that of fossil fuels, but this gap is narrowing as collection systems improve and processes are optimized.
