According to our (Global Info Research) latest study, the global Biodiesel Alternative Fuel market size was valued at US$ 90119 million in 2025 and is forecast to a readjusted size of US$ 121582 million by 2032 with a CAGR of 4.4% during review period.
In 2025, global sales of biodiesel alternative fuels are projected to reach 65.4 million tons, with an average price of $1,339 per ton.
Biodiesel-like alternative fuel is a fuel that can replace traditional petroleum diesel, which is mainly produced from renewable biomass resources. Biodiesel is usually produced by reacting vegetable oils (such as canola, soybean, palm, etc.) or animal fats (such as tallow, waste cooking oil) with chemicals such as methanol. This type of alternative fuel is widely seen as a way to reduce dependence on fossil fuels, lower carbon emissions and promote sustainable energy.
The primary raw materials for biodiesel alternative fuels consist mainly of waste oils and fats (UCO) and vegetable oils. As the world's largest producer of waste oils and fats, China has an annual recoverable volume of approximately 4 to 6 million tons; it also imports supplementary feedstocks, such as palm acid oil. Europe relies primarily on rapeseed oil (RME), the Americas focus mainly on soybean oil, while Southeast Asia leverages palm oil as its dominant feedstock. Raw material costs constitute the absolute dominant factor in total production costs, accounting for approximately 70% to 85%. Among these, fluctuations in the price of waste oils and fats directly impact corporate profitability—the production of Fatty Acid Methyl Esters (FAME) becomes economically viable only when the price of UCO falls below that of conventional diesel by a certain margin. For the Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil (HVO) production route, in addition to oil and fat feedstocks, the cost of hydrogen (accounting for approximately 10% to 15% of production costs) serves as another critical variable. Currently, production relies predominantly on fossil-derived "grey hydrogen"; however, the future transition to "green hydrogen" will significantly improve the carbon footprint, albeit potentially driving up production costs.
Regarding cost structure, first-generation FAME utilizes a transesterification process involving relatively low capital investment in equipment. However, the oxygen content in the final product results in lower energy density and poor low-temperature flow properties; furthermore, the market price of the glycerol byproduct (which accounts for approximately 10% of total output) exerts a significant influence on overall economic viability. Second-generation HVO employs a hydrotreating process characterized by high capital intensity; however, the resulting product consists of pure alkanes that are fully miscible with fossil diesel at any blending ratio, offering significantly higher added value compared to FAME. Notably, a single hydrotreating facility can flexibly produce either HVO (diesel-range fractions) or SAF (aviation fuel-range fractions) by adjusting the fractional distillation cut points, thereby enabling the optimization of product portfolios to adapt to shifting market demands. With the implementation of mandatory blending policies for marine fuels within the EU and the potential for expanded automotive application in China, the biodiesel industry is poised to further reduce unit costs through economies of scale; nevertheless, the stability of raw material supplies and the volatility of international oil and fat prices remain significant long-term challenges.
