Biocide-free antifouling agent is a type of marine antifouling agents that do not contain toxic biocides in their composition, significantly reducing the harm to the aquatic environment during use. This type of antifouling agent typically employs self-polishing materials and silicone hydrogel materials. The former can prevent the attachment of marine organisms by gradually releasing chemicals from the coating within a certain period of time; while silicone hydrogel materials utilize organic silicone adhesives and organic silicone hydrogel micro-layers to significantly enhance the smoothness of the hull, reduce friction, and make it difficult for marine organisms to adhere to the hull surface.
Traditional marine antifouling agents are mostly copper or tin-based hard matrix paints or coatings compounded with biocides. The former slowly leach into water, leading to excessively high metal content in the marine ecosystem, while the biocides compounded in the latter will be released and dispersed in water, harming aquatic organisms and threatening ecological safety. Biocide-free antifouling agents avoid the environmental hazards caused by the above-mentioned products, and significantly reduce the attachment of organisms such as barnacles on the hull by improving the smoothness of the hull surface. These antifouling agents are usually self-polishing materials or silicone polymer materials. The downstream industries of antifouling agents include shipping, marine engineering, aquaculture, coastal power plants, etc. With the development of marine economy and marine science and technology, the demand for marine energy increases, and more marine engineering projects have entered the research and development stage. At the same time, these industries have a large demand for antifouling agents, so the demand for high-performance and environmentally friendly antifouling agents is also growing.
