Bio-based PET film refers to polyethylene terephthalate (PET) films partially derived from renewable biomass feedstocks (such as sugarcane or corn), where bio-based ethylene glycol (MEG) replaces fossil-based raw materials. In 2025, global Bio-based PET film production reached approximately 62.51 Kilotons. The bio-based PET film value chain includes biomass feedstock production, PET polymerization, film manufacturing, and downstream applications. Upstream involves renewable feedstocks such as sugarcane and corn, which are converted into bio-based ethylene glycol (Bio-MEG), while terephthalic acid (PTA) remains largely petroleum-based. Overall, bio-PET film is positioned as a low-carbon upgrade of conventional PET rather than a fully biodegradable polymer.
Bio-based PET film is a low-carbon evolution pathway of conventional BOPET film under global decarbonization trends. Rather than being a new polymer system, it is essentially a material substitution strategy in which bio-based monoethylene glycol (Bio-MEG) partially replaces fossil-based feedstocks while maintaining the same PET molecular structure and film performance characteristics.
