In the display industry, ALD is mainly used for thin-film encapsulation (TFE), water and oxygen barrier layers, insulating layers, and interface modification layers in OLED displays. It is also used in Mini-LED and Micro-LED displays for pixel passivation, dielectric layers, and reliability enhancement layers. Compared to traditional CVD/PVD processes, Display-ALD has significant advantages in film thickness accuracy, reliability, and material compatibility, making it a key supporting process for flexible displays, foldable displays, and next-generation high-end display technologies.
The Display-ALD industry chain can be divided into three levels: upstream materials and components, midstream equipment and system integration, and downstream display manufacturing and end-user applications. The upstream sector primarily includes high-purity ALD precursor chemicals, specialty gases, valves, vacuum systems, and control software. The stability and purity of the precursors directly determine the film performance and yield, making it one of the most technologically challenging segments. The midstream sector comprises ALD equipment and solution providers, covering experimental, mass production, and batch or space-based ALD systems for large-size glass substrates, along with process development and production line integration services. The downstream sector consists of OLED, LCD, Mini-LED, and Micro-LED panel manufacturers. ALD technology is embedded in evaporation, encapsulation, or back-end processes, ultimately serving end products such as smartphones, televisions, automotive displays, and wearables. Overall, Display-ALD represents a typical highly synergistic supply chain encompassing materials, equipment, processes, and panels.
From a market potential perspective, Display-ALD currently accounts for a relatively limited share of the overall ALD market, but it possesses significant medium- to long-term growth potential.
