According to our (Global Info Research) latest study, the global Aqueous Zinc Battery market size was valued at US$ 21.40 million in 2025 and is forecast to a readjusted size of US$ 319 million by 2032 with a CAGR of 48.8% during review period.
An Aqueous Zinc Battery is a rechargeable secondary battery that uses metallic zinc, zinc foil, or a zinc-based composite as the negative electrode; a cathode capable of reversibly accommodating Zn²⁺, such as a manganese-based oxide, vanadium-based compound, or Prussian blue analogue; and a zinc-salt aqueous solution or water-based gel as the electrolyte. Its defining mechanism is reversible zinc plating and stripping at the negative electrode combined with Zn²⁺ insertion, extraction, or a related coupled storage reaction at the positive electrode. Typical cell voltages are approximately 1.0 V to 1.5 V, making the technology more suitable for stationary storage than for passenger vehicles requiring very high gravimetric energy density. Salient Energy’s publicly documented system uses a non-toxic, near-neutral aqueous electrolyte and a Zn²⁺-intercalation cathode, and its cells did not exhibit thermal runaway or flammable gas generation during UL 9540A testing.
The upstream value chain includes refined zinc, zinc foil, manganese dioxide and other cathode materials, zinc salts, electrolyte additives, conductive agents, separators, current collectors, and battery manufacturing equipment. Midstream activities include material formulation, electrode coating, cell manufacturing, module assembly, battery management, and energy storage system integration, with representative participants including Enerpoly, Vastech Technology, Salient Energy, and Rongxin Nanjing. Downstream demand primarily comes from commercial and industrial storage, renewable energy integration, residential storage, microgrids, telecommunications backup, and selected light-mobility applications. The product occupies the midstream battery manufacturing and system integration segment. Its profit pool is therefore concentrated less in commodity zinc and more in proprietary cathode and electrolyte formulations, cell consistency, cycle-life engineering, manufacturing yield, safety validation, and application-specific system integration.
In 2025, global Aqueous Zinc Battery shipments were approximately 80 MWh, with an average FOB price of about US$260 per kWh and an estimated manufacturing-project gross margin of approximately 10% to 25%.
Aqueous Zinc-Ion Batteries Enter An Early Commercial Window As Safety Becomes A Procurement Metric
Aqueous Zinc-Ion Batteries have progressed from laboratory materials research into large-format cells, demonstration systems, and early commercial deliveries, although the sector has not yet established the standardized products or large-scale supply base seen in lithium iron phosphate batteries. Enerpoly has moved its Swedish facility into production ramp-up with a staged target of 100 MWh per year. Vastech Technology reports commercial deliveries and several demonstration systems, including a project of up to 4 MWh. Rongxin Nanjing has completed a pre-pilot line, while Salient Energy has developed 20-Ah-class cells, 48-V modules, and a residential demonstration system. The clearest near-term opportunity is therefore not wholesale displacement of lithium-ion batteries, but penetration of indoor storage, densely populated locations, industrial facilities, telecommunications infrastructure, and microgrids where thermal-runaway risk, fire separation, and environmental safety carry measurable economic value.
The industrial advantage extends beyond the availability of low-cost zinc. Aqueous manufacturing can reduce requirements for dry rooms, organic-solvent recovery, energy-intensive formation cycling, and coated graphite anodes, while retaining substantial compatibility with existing lithium-ion coating, calendaring, stacking, and packaging equipment. However, the commercialization risks remain material. Zinc dendrite formation, hydrogen evolution, corrosion, cathode dissolution, electrolyte water loss, freezing at low temperatures, and large-format cell variability can all impair efficiency and cycle life. Salient Energy’s nominal 10-kWh demonstration system achieved a peak tested capacity of only approximately 2.5 kWh because of prototype-cell capacity and consistency limitations. This result illustrates why laboratory half-cell results cannot replace engineering validation at commercially relevant cathode loading, zinc utilization, electrolyte quantity, depth of discharge, and system scale. At the same time, lithium-ion storage prices continue to fall. The IEA reported that utility-scale battery project costs declined to approximately US$150 per kWh in 2024, limiting the premium that an emerging zinc-ion supplier can command solely on the basis of low-cost raw materials.
Demand is expected to emerge first in commercial and industrial storage, solar-plus-storage, residential and telecommunications backup, and other stationary applications that value safety more than minimum weight or footprint. Utility-scale adoption is likely to follow only after suppliers demonstrate bankable cycle life, consistent production quality, independent safety certification, and long-duration field performance. Procurement decisions will increasingly move beyond initial US dollars per kWh and incorporate fire-protection infrastructure, usable depth of discharge, round-trip efficiency, degradation, maintenance, recycling, and project-finance acceptance. Sustainable profitability will therefore depend less on announced factory capacity and more on converting cathode stabilization and zinc-anode protection into repeatable manufacturing processes. As scale increases, standard cell manufacturing margins are likely to converge toward those of the broader battery industry, while higher-margin opportunities remain in specialized electrolytes, functional separators, high-consistency cells, BMS algorithms, and application-specific storage-system integration.
