Animal-derived heart valves are surgically implanted to replace damaged or malfunctioning heart valves. They can replace either the aortic valve or the mitral valve, depending on the patient"s condition. Animal-derived heart valves are readily available, and the surgery for implantation is well-established. They have good hemodynamic performance and can last for a significant period.
