Due to their large pore size and high specific surface area (200–600 m² g⁻¹), they are widely used in heavy oil catalytic cracking (FCC), olefin oligomerization, biomass aromatization, alkyl transfer, and hydrocracking reactions, acting as an "acid support" or "bifunctional acid."
Industrial-grade ASA uses silica sol (or water glass) and sodium aluminate/aluminum sulfate as co-precipitation precursors. The process involves acid-alkali co-flow precipitation, aging, filtration, drying, and calcination at 600 °C before shaping. In terms of raw material costs, water glass accounts for 35–40%, aluminum sulfate for 20–25%, acid (H₂SO₄) and alkali (NaOH) for 10%, energy consumption (drying + calcination) for 15%, and labor and environmental treatment for 10–15%.
