The supply chain begins upstream with carbon-rich feedstocks (biomass like coconut shells, lignin, or synthetic polymers), followed by midstream carbonization (pyrolysis at 800–1400°C in inert atmosphere) to form hard carbon, and then activation processing to tailor porosity and surface chemistry. Downstream steps include purification, milling, classification, and surface modification to meet application-specific requirements. The end-use sectors span energy storage (especially sodium-ion and hybrid capacitors), environmental applications (air/water purification), chemical processing (catalyst supports), and emerging fields such as carbon capture and hydrogen storage. In 2025, global Activated Hard Carbon output was about 420,000 tons with 650,000 tons of capacity, average prices of USD 2,200 – 3,800 per ton, and gross margins around 33%.
