3D printing PLA materials is an additive manufacturing material mainly composed of polylactic acid as the main matrix, which is formed by adding pigments, toughening agents, nucleating agents, lubricants, chain extenders, and other functional additives through modified granulation, melt extrusion, or resin formulation. It mainly includes FDM and FFF PLA printing wires, PLA particles, and some PLA based composite materials. FDM uses PLA wire usually made into 1.75mm or 2.85mm specifications. During printing, it is fed into the hot end by a feeding mechanism for melting, and then extruded layer by layer through a nozzle and cooled to form. PLA material has the characteristics of relatively low printing temperature, small warpage, high molding accuracy, good surface quality, light odor, and strong equipment compatibility. It is widely used in household consumer goods, cultural and creative figurines, educational aids, scientific research models, building sand tables, product prototypes, and personalized customization. PLA is usually made from renewable resources such as corn and sugarcane, and has biobased properties. However, ordinary PLA does not necessarily mean that it can be rapidly degraded in natural environments. It usually requires industrial composting facilities to provide suitable temperature, humidity, and microbial conditions.In 2025, global 3D Printing PLA Materials production reached approximately 61,537 Tons, with an average global market price of around US$ 11.53 per kg.
3D printing PLA materialsl will continue to be a fundamental material in the consumer grade additive manufacturing market, with advantages such as easy printing, low warpage, light odor, rich color selection, and strong equipment compatibility, which will maintain a high penetration rate in the fields of home makers, education and research, cultural and creative figurines, architectural models, product prototypes, and personalized consumer goods. With the upgrading of consumer grade 3D printers towards high-speed, multi-color, intelligent recognition, and automatic parameter matching, ordinary PLA is accelerating its expansion into segmented products such as high-speed PLA, high toughness PLA, heat-resistant PLA, matte PLA, silk PLA, gradient PLA, foamed PLA, and natural fiber composite PLA. The focus of industry competition will also shift from relying solely on color and low price to melt flow stability, interlayer bonding strength, wire diameter consistency, low moisture content, batch stability, and mainstream equipment adaptability. Future education, family, and cultural and creative clients will pay more attention to low odor, safety, printing success rate, and surface effects, while consumer goods and professional design clients will place greater emphasis on mechanical performance, heat resistance, and dimensional accuracy. Although PLA materials have bio based properties, ordinary products usually require industrial composting conditions to achieve rapid degradation. Enterprises cannot mix the concepts of bio based, biodegradable, and household compostable materials. With the improvement of environmental supervision and consumer awareness, bio based content certification, carbon footprint management, recycled PLA, reusable spools, and recycling of waste printed parts will become new competitive factors.
