Project Insight - Water and Sewage Construction Projects: Middle East and Africa

Summary

GlobalData’s Construction Intelligence Center (CIC) is currently tracking water and sewage related construction projects in the Middle East and Africa with a total value of US$133.2 billion. Of this, US$58.8 billion is in the execution stage and US$40.3 billion is in the pre-execution stage. Saudi Arabia, leads with projects valued at US$20.7 billion, followed by Kuwait with a project value of US$20.4 billion. In order of the projects’ values, the top ten countries are Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Qatar, the UAE, Oman, Iraq, Mauritania, South Africa, Bahrain, and Egypt. The highest value project tracked by the CIC in the region is the US$15.0 billion Al Zour North IWPP Plant in Kuwait, which will be a major power and desalination project for the country.

The Middle East and Africa includes the developing countries of Africa and the highly developed Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries, with oil revenue to be spent on developing and improving water and sewage infrastructure. The Middle East and North Africa (MENA) is the world's most water-scarce region, with 17 countries below the water poverty line set by the United Nations. Rapid population and economic growth, shared water supplies across borders, and the effects of climate change - including frequent droughts, together with declining rainfall - have severely tested water supplies. The desalination of seawater is common in the region, according to GlobalData’s CIC project analysis.
The potential for wide scale epidemics in sub-Saharan Africa as a result of poor water supply and wastewater treatment is a constant threat in the region.
