X-ray Fluorescence (XRF) Measuring Instruments, also called XRF analyzers or XRF spectrometers, are analytical instruments used to determine the elemental composition, concentration, coating thickness, or elemental distribution of solid, powder, liquid, film, and coating samples by measuring their characteristic X-ray fluorescence. When a sample is irradiated with primary X-rays, atoms in the material are excited and subsequently emit secondary X-rays with energies characteristic of individual elements; the instrument measures these signals to identify and quantify the elements present. XRF is generally a rapid, non-destructive, multi-element analytical technique and is widely used in industrial quality control, research laboratories, mining, metals, environmental analysis, electronics, and materials testing.
XRF instruments range from handheld field analyzers to benchtop laboratory systems and high-performance floor-standing spectrometers. The two principal analytical technologies are Energy Dispersive X-ray Fluorescence (EDXRF) and Wavelength Dispersive X-ray Fluorescence (WDXRF). EDXRF measures the energies of multiple fluorescent X-rays simultaneously, while WDXRF uses analyzing crystals to separate characteristic X-rays by wavelength and generally provides higher spectral resolution for demanding quantitative applications.
