The supply chain begins upstream with vanadium extraction (primarily from vanadium-bearing titanomagnetite ores, steel slag, or secondary residues), followed by vanadium pentoxide (V₂O₅) production and purification. Midstream processing converts V₂O₅ into vanadium sulfate or mixed-valence electrolyte solutions through chemical dissolution, reduction, and valence balancing. Downstream, electrolyte producers supply pre-mixed, performance-certified solutions to VRFB system integrators and energy storage developers, with leasing and recycling models increasingly common due to vanadium’s high recoverability and residual value. In 2025, global Vanadium Electrolyte Solution output was about 95,000 tons, with 150,000 tons of capacity. Prices range from USD 5,500 – 9,500 per ton, with roughly 22% gross margin.
