Vanadium Carbide is a hard refractory transition metal carbide composed of vanadium and carbon, known for its extremely high hardness, high melting point (about 2,810°C), excellent wear resistance, good thermal stability, and electrical conductivity. It is widely used as a grain growth inhibitor and strengthening additive in cemented carbides, high-speed steels, tool steels, cermets, wear-resistant coatings, additive manufacturing powders, and advanced ceramic composites. The supply chain of vanadium carbide begins with upstream raw materials including vanadium-bearing ores (such as vanadiferous titanomagnetite), recycled vanadium-containing materials, petroleum coke, graphite, or carbon black. Vanadium is extracted and refined into intermediates such as vanadium pentoxide (V₂O₅), ferrovanadium, or vanadium metal, which are then reacted with high-purity carbon through carbothermal reduction or direct carburization at high temperatures to produce vanadium carbide powder. The resulting material is milled, classified, and processed into different particle sizes and purity grades before being supplied to downstream manufacturers of cutting tools, powder metallurgy products, wear-resistant components, thermal spray coatings, aerospace materials, automotive parts, mining equipment, energy systems, and other high-performance industrial applications. In 2025, global Vanadium Carbide output was about 30,000 tons with 35,000 tons of capacity, average prices of USD 12,000–30,000 per ton, and gross margins around 34%.
