UV-curable monomers are low-molecular-weight reactive compounds containing polymerizable functional groups that participate in rapid crosslinking or polymerization when exposed to ultraviolet light in the presence of a photoinitiator. They are important components of UV-curable formulations and function both as reactive diluents and as structural building blocks of the cured polymer network. Unlike conventional organic solvents, these monomers are incorporated into the cured film during polymerization, helping reduce formulation viscosity while contributing to hardness, flexibility, adhesion, chemical resistance, curing speed and surface performance. According to functionality, UV-curable monomers are commonly divided into monofunctional, difunctional, trifunctional, and higher-functional monomers. Monofunctional products generally provide lower viscosity, improved flexibility and reduced shrinkage, while multifunctional products usually deliver faster curing, greater crosslink density, higher hardness and stronger resistance to chemicals, heat and abrasion.
The main raw materials used to manufacture UV-curable monomers include acrylic acid, methacrylic acid, functional alcohols, polyols, glycols, epoxy compounds, organic acids, ethers, amines and selected bio-based intermediates. Common products include hydroxyethyl acrylate, hydroxypropyl acrylate, isobornyl acrylate, tripropylene glycol diacrylate, hexanediol diacrylate, trimethylolpropane triacrylate and other specialty acrylate or methacrylate monomers. Production generally involves esterification, etherification, addition reactions, purification, inhibitor adjustment and quality-control processes. Key product indicators include functionality, viscosity, purity, acid value, moisture content, color, residual monomer content, curing response and storage stability. Downstream customers include manufacturers of UV coatings, printing inks, adhesives, electronic materials, optical materials, 3D-printing resins, wood finishes, automotive coatings, plastic coatings, metal coatings, nail products and composite materials. Formulators select different monomers according to substrate, curing equipment, film thickness, mechanical requirements and regulatory conditions.
