Formaldehyde emission standards for furniture, flooring, interior panels, and building materials have become stricter in many markets, pushing resin producers to develop low free-formaldehyde, low molar ratio, melamine-modified, formaldehyde-scavenger-added, and process-stable UF resin systems. Although alternative adhesives such as pMDI, soy-based adhesives, lignin-based adhesives, and formaldehyde-free systems are gaining attention, UF resin still maintains a strong position in cost-sensitive interior applications because manufacturers can upgrade emission performance without completely changing existing production lines.
The market is also supported by specialty applications beyond wood panels. UF-based systems are used in amino molding compounds, coating crosslinkers, paper and textile treatment, abrasives, foundry binders, decorative laminates, and slow-release nitrogen formulations. These applications are smaller than wood adhesives in volume, but they improve product diversity and margin structure for integrated resin producers.
