    Uncoupling Protein refers to a family of mitochondrial inner-membrane carrier proteins that are commercialized mainly as membrane protein targets, recombinant proteins, antibodies, assay kits, peptides, gene clones, and cell lysate-related research products. In its natural form, Uncoupling Protein is embedded in the mitochondrial inner membrane and contains multiple transmembrane regions. It regulates proton re-entry across the membrane, so that the proton gradient generated by cellular respiration is not fully converted into adenosine triphosphate synthesis, but is partly dissipated as heat or changes in membrane potential. The commercial appearance and physical form vary by product category.
