Thorium tungsten electrodes are a type of tungsten-based electrode material made by using tungsten (W) as the matrix and adding thorium oxide as a dopant. They are primarily manufactured via powder metallurgy: high-purity tungsten powder is mixed with a specific proportion of thorium oxide powder, followed by pressing, sintering, swaging, drawing, and grinding to produce electrodes with stable dimensions and excellent high-temperature performance. Due to the low electron work function of thorium oxide, its addition enhances the tungsten electrode's electron emission capability, arc stability, arc-starting performance, and current-carrying capacity. Consequently, thoriated tungsten electrodes have long been among the most widely used types of electrodes for Tungsten Inert Gas (TIG/GTAW) welding; they are particularly suitable for DC welding and enable high-quality welding of materials such as stainless steel, carbon steel, nickel-based alloys, and titanium alloys.
The technological development of thorium tungsten electrodes has primarily focused on optimizing oxide doping ratios, enhancing material uniformity, and developing alternative materials. Conventional tungsten electrodes are typically manufactured by mixing tungsten powder with thorium oxide and subjecting the mixture to powder metallurgy, sintering, swaging, and drawing processes; WT20 (containing approximately 2% thorium oxide) is the most widely used grade. Thorium oxide lowers the electron work function and enhances electron emission, resulting in superior arc-starting characteristics and arc stability. However, due to the radioactive nature of thorium oxide, the industry is shifting toward thorium-free alternatives. Currently, lanthanated (La₂O₃), ceriated (CeO₂), and composite rare-earth tungsten electrodes have emerged as the primary substitutes, utilizing rare-earth oxide doping to achieve welding performance that rivals or even surpasses that of thoriated electrodes.
