Synthesis process costs account for approximately 15–25%, covering energy consumption for polymerization, equipment depreciation, labor, and quality control; SEBS processing costs are about 20–30% higher than those of SBS due to the required hydrogenation step. Modification and processing costs make up roughly 10–20%, encompassing steps such as grafting reactions, extrusion pelletization, and purification/drying; maleic anhydride grafting requires melt grafting in a twin-screw extruder, entailing higher energy consumption and equipment investment. Purification and packaging costs account for approximately 5–10%. Compared to rubber-type tougheners (such as CTBN), thermoplastic elastomer-type tougheners generally incur 15–30% higher overall costs due to the higher price of the base materials and the need for additional functionalization steps. However, they offer advantages such as maintaining the glass transition temperature (Tg) and modulus of the epoxy resin and enabling higher value-added potential in specific applications (e.g., electronic packaging, high-end coatings), making them more cost-competitive in certain sectors.
