Instead, leuco dyes, acidic developers, and low-melting-point temperature-controlled solvents are first mixed in proportion to form a sensitive core material. This is then emulsified into a homogeneous oil in an aqueous emulsion. In-situ or interfacial polymerization with the aqueous phase allows urea-formaldehyde/melamine-formaldehyde or epoxy resin to form a dense shell at the three-phase interface, locking all three components into microcapsules several micrometers in size. Subsequent solid-liquid separation, cleaning, and drying yield an environmentally resistant thermochromic pigment. The particle size distribution and shell density at this step largely determine the product's lifespan and color consistency. The microcapsule pigment, along with dispersants, defoamers, thickeners, and other additives, is then slowly mixed into a polyurethane or acrylate binder. This mixture undergoes pre-dispersion high-speed stirring, followed by fine grinding and filtration using a three-roll mill. Throughout the process, temperature control and avoidance of strong light are crucial, and the fineness and viscosity must be adjusted to a window suitable for screen printing, gravure printing, flexographic printing, or inkjet printing. The final product is a printing ink capable of switching between colorless and colored/colored states near a specified threshold.
